About 56 families of the Badi community have been living in Namuna Basti of Narayan Municipality-1, the headquarter of Dailekh district since 2003 occupying very small plots (about 1 Katha = 126 square meters) of non-registered land per family. Their traditional source of livelihood the provision of entertainment by going from house to house, making musical instruments and pottery complemented by fishing. Due to modernization, their traditional occupation is no longer viable, and in the absence of alternative sources of livelihood, employment opportunities and ownership of land they are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Since most men are compelled to go to India and other places in search of work, the responsibility of taking care of their family and daily living lies on the shoulders of women. Women are working as daily wage laborers to make ends meet. However, they face wage discrimination as they usually do not get equal wages as men. Due to lack of land ownership, banks and financial institutions are not providing subsidized loans using their land as collateral. They also live in constant fear of eviction.
