Celebration of 63rd International Human Rights Day


FIAN Nepal participated in different programs to celebrate 63rd International Human Rights day on 10 and 11 December 2011. The programs of central office are as follows:

Rally organized by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC): A rally was taken out in Kathmandu on 10th December 2011 to mark the day. Human rights activists and members of the civil society participated in the rally carrying a slogan Human Rights Friendly Constitution, Peace through Justice. The rally began from Bhrikuti Mandap and turned into an assembly at Basantpur Square. Addressing the participants, NHRC chairperson Kedar Nath Upadhyaya stressed on the need to make government accountable. FIAN Nepal also joined the rally for the solidarity to celebrate the day.

Stall in the premises of NHRC: In the premises of NHRC office, various organisations kept their stalls to demonstrated their activities in human rights. FIAN Nepal is one of the pioneer organisation working on human rights based right to food. Vaious publications, posters and other materials were demonstrated in the stall to disseminate the information about the right to food. Many people from different organisations, media persons, government offices have visited FIAN Nepal’s stall and learned about right to food. Hon’ble Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai also visited the stall. FIAN Nepal has gifted him the publications, T-shirt and bag.

Candle light with empty plates: FIAN Nepal in collaboration with Heartbeat jointly organised candle light with empty plates at Shantivatika on the celebration of International Human Rights Day 2011 on 10th December 2011.

Peace demonstration with empty plates in front of CA Hall and Staff College: FIAN Nepal organised a peace demonstration in front of Constitution Assembly Hall, New Baneshwor and Staff College where the closing ceremony of Human Rights celebration was organising. Youth gathered on the demonstration with empty plates to ensure the people’s right to food in the constitution.

Programmes from Cluster Office, Nepalgunj

Various activities were also conducted in celebration of 63rd International Human Rights Day by FIAN Nepal, cluster office.

In collaboration with Human Rights Network, Nepalgunj, FIAN Nepal Cluster Office conducted following programs to mark the day.
1) Banner with a slogan “Right to Food; Right to Dignified Life” has been hanged up over to the belashpur entrance point of Nepalgunj on 2nd December,2011.

2) Participate as a organizer in College level Essay Competition on “Adolescent girls Rights; Opportunities and Challenges” on 8th December by NHRC and CWIN, Nepalgunj in Swastik Cottage, Nepalgunj

3) Mass Sensitization program on Violence against Women on 8th December in Binauna,Chilauriha(Rapti Area) coordinated by HR Network,Nepalgunj and organize by ENRUDEC, INSEC, Bee Group, Him Rights, HRPLSC and RRN. FIAN Nepal participated in the program too as the member of HR Network ,Nepalgunj.

4) On 10 December,2011 ,approx.250 people along with the representatives from different targeted communities of FIAN Nepal participated on the rally from BP Chowk -Swastik Cottage-Nepalgunj.Later on the Summary report on 16 days activism against violence against women presentation by INSEC,whereas Prize Distribution for the winner of College Level Essay Competition in collaboration of NHRC and CWIN,Nepalgunj has been organized.

First premier show of the Documentary on Laxmanpur dam with “the perspective of Right to Food “has been presented by FIAN-Nepal on 10 December, 2011, the day to celebrate International Human Rights.This documentary tried to cover over all problems the people been facing due to floods and how it influences the lives of (more than 25,000) people of 6 Vdcs (Approx.2400 HH) and the initiations, the struggle committee had taken to address the issue. On the same day Signature campaign to create pressure on the formulation of constitution on time and street drama focusing on VAW has been organized by the other members of the HR Network, Nepalgunj.

Programmes from Field Office, Bajura

FIAN Nepal in collaboration with Right to Food Network, Bajura, conducted signature campaign to celebrate Human Rights Day. Bajura is one of the geographically remote and food insecure district among 43 districts of Nepal. People from this district are still suffering from hunger. On the occasion of 63rd International Human Rights Day, the people from Bajura demanded with the governmet to declare and make Bajura district as one of the food secure district. Every human are free to live and hence they have fundamental right for food. Government should ensure the people’s right to food and also ensure equal access to the food to all. Furthermore, government should include right to food as a fundamental right in the upcoming constitution. Signature campaing has been conducted in this process and more than 500 people from various sectors such as representative from different political parties, civil society, social activists, teachers, students, farmers and other signed the campain and shown their solidarity. According to the FIAN Nepal field officer Mr. Madan R. Joshi, the campaign will be handed over to the Prime Minister through Bajura District Administration Office and also mentioned that unless and utill government don’t ensure the peoples right to food, these kinds of campaigns will be continued.
